Divorce rates are soaring in a district of Beijing where it now pays to be single.

Two communities in the Chongwen district of the city are being destroyed to make way for new homes.

But the developers buying the old homes through compulsory purchase orders pay more to single people than married couples.

In recent weeks, hundreds of couples in the two communities have filed for divorce, according to a report in the Beijing Youth Daily quoted in the South China Morning Post.

Many of the applicants are newly weds, although one couple were both more than 80-years-old.

The real estate developers are suspicious but are still obliged to pay out the additional compensation which can be worth as much as an extra 5,350.
